The drive down I-75 is finally behind you.
The house is open, the AC is running, and the calendar is already filling up with dinners at Lake Sumter Landing and mornings at the pool.
Then you open the garage.
The car that sat there all summer is covered in a fine layer of dust. Or the one you just drove a thousand miles south has a bumper full of bugs and a few new chips on the hood.
Either way, it is not quite the car you left.
The good news is that most of what happens to a car over the summer can be fixed, and a little attention now sets it up for a great season.
Two Kinds of Cars Come Back Every Fall
Every October and November, we see two kinds of cars come back to The Villages.
The first stayed here all summer, parked in a garage or under a carport while its owner was up north. It did not move for months, but it sat through Florida heat and humidity the whole time.
The second just made the long drive down. It spent two or three days on the interstate collecting bugs, road tar, and grit at highway speed.
Each one needs something a little different. The checklist below covers both.
Start With the Battery and the Tires
A car that sits for months in the heat is hard on a battery. If yours was not on a battery tender, do not be surprised if it needs a jump or a replacement.
Check the tire pressure before you drive anywhere. Tires lose air while they sit, and they can develop flat spots that usually smooth out after a few miles of driving.
While you are at it, look at the wiper blades. Summer heat dries out rubber, and you will want them working the first time an afternoon storm rolls through.
Check the Inside Before You Settle In
A closed car in a Florida summer gets hot and humid inside.
Open the doors and take a breath. A musty smell is often the first sign of mildew on the carpets, seats, or headliner. Check under the floor mats and in the trunk, too.
It is also worth looking under the hood. Cars that sit for months can attract small critters looking for a quiet place to nest.
If you find mildew, do not just cover it with an air freshener. Leather and fabric are best cleaned properly before the problem spreads, and a professional interior cleaning is usually the fastest fix.
Wash Off the Dust the Right Way
It is tempting to wipe off a dusty car with a towel and call it done.
Please do not.
That dust is full of fine grit, and dragging it across the paint is one of the fastest ways to put swirl marks in a finish. Rinse the car thoroughly first to float the dirt off, then hand wash it with a pH-neutral soap and a clean microfiber mitt.
If the car has a ceramic coating, use a coating-safe soap and the dust should rinse away easily.
Get Bugs and Road Grime Off Quickly
If you drove down, the front of your car took the brunt of the trip.
Bug residue is acidic, and the longer it sits in the Florida sun, the more likely it is to etch into the clear coat. The same goes for road tar along the lower panels.
Soften bug residue with a wet microfiber towel for a few minutes before wiping it away. Avoid scrubbing, and never use a kitchen sponge or a stiff brush.
If spots are still there after a careful wash, they may have already etched into the paint. That brings us to the next step.
Take a Close Look at the Paint
Once the car is clean, pull it out into the sunlight and walk around it slowly.
Look for swirl marks and fine scratches, especially on dark colors. Look for dull or hazy areas on the hood and roof. Check for small etched spots where bugs or bird droppings sat too long, and for new rock chips on the hood, bumper, and mirrors from the highway drive.
If the paint still looks deep and glossy, you are in good shape.
If it looks tired, it is better to deal with it now, before the season gets busy.
Fix the Paint Before You Protect It
This is the step most people get backwards.
Many owners come back and want a ceramic coating right away. But a coating locks in whatever is underneath it. Coat over swirls and etching, and you have sealed them in for years.
That is why paint correction comes first. Using machine polishing, the damaged top layer of clear coat is carefully refined until the swirls, haze, and light etching are gone and the gloss comes back.
Light swirls may only need a single polishing step. Heavier defects may need two.
Estimated pricing at Tim’s Pro Auto Spa: a one-step paint correction starts at around $400 to $800, and a two-step correction typically runs about $800 to $1,500. Most cars take 1 to 2 days.

Protect It for the Months Ahead
Once the paint is corrected, it is the perfect time to protect it.
A ceramic coating keeps the restored gloss longer, makes washing easier through the busy season, and gives bugs and bird droppings a harder time sticking. When you head north again in the spring, a coated car is also much easier to bring back next fall.
If you make the I-75 drive every year, paint protection film on the front end is worth a look, too. The hood, bumper, and mirrors take most of the rock chips on that drive, and the film takes them instead of your paint.
Estimated pricing at Tim’s Pro Auto Spa: ceramic coating starts at around $900 for most cars, depending on vehicle size and the coating you choose. It is usually applied right after paint correction, adding about a day.
